The English language is evolving every day, and we are currently seeing changes which relate to this question.
'Was' is used for the singular. 'Were' for the plural. She was busy. They were busy. In instances where we speak in a metaphorical or figurative manner, 'were' is applied for both singular and plural. If I were King for a day! (Beware the definition of metaphorical and figurative. Can cause quite a debate when applying this rule). Yet recent usage and discussions illustrate a small movement to challenge this rule; 'was' for singular and 'were' for plural, whether metaphorical, figurative or otherwise. If I was King for a day! If they were Kings for a day! Time will tell.
